Why You Should See a Dermatologist Every Year
It shouldn’t surprise you that we love teledermatology. We truly believe the telemedicine industry can bring life-saving care to patients who may not be able to access healthcare, whether because of cost, distance or availability. However, that doesn’t mean we believe that teledermatology “appointments” should replace your yearly in-office visit with a dermatologist.
It is recommended that patients visit a board-certified dermatologist annually for a full-body exam. Why? Because each year, there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. The statistics regarding skin cancer are quite scary: one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime, and one person dies from melanoma every hour.
Even if you are healthy and have no history of skin cancer, you should still see a dermatologist on an annual basis. We sometimes forget that skin is our largest organ. It protects our bodies from the elements, fights bacteria, and even helps regulate body temperature. So, just because you may not notice or experience a major dermatologic condition, you shouldn’t take your skin for granted. Healthy skin is essential for our overall health, and an annual trip to see the dermatologist will keep us as healthy as possible.
If you need to find a board-certified dermatologist near you, we recommend using the American Academy of Dermatology’s search tool. Not only can you search by location, but you can also filter by doctor name and specialties. Click here to find a dermatologist now.
